A set of guidelines has been approved by President Benigno Aquino   on the use by government officials and employees of social networking sites like  Twitter and Facebook, Malacañang said on Tuesday.

Abigail Valte, Deputy presidential spokesperson  said to  reporters that Malacañang was just consulting with certain government agencies to improve the guidelines to simplify the do’s and don’ts, so as to address its implications on the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

For clarification, the use of the social networking sites by government people is “not being banned” however guidelines had to be set as to “what is acceptable to be said,” Valte said at a Malacañang news briefing, adding that “if we’re government employees, what’s said in public is also reflective of the government.”

The guidelines were put in to consideration after the  Twitter controversy involving one of Aquino’s speechwriters, who tweeted after attending a state dinner in Vietnam that “The wine sucks.”
