Two Koreas cross fire at the border

korea crossfire

North Korea fired artillery shells at South Korea prompting the latter to retaliate.  This is the biggest attack in years between the two Koreas since the end of the war.  Residents of the island of Yeonpyeong near the site of attack had been evacuated.

South Korea has issued its highest non-wartime alert in response.

Yonhap news report said that the North’s artillery shells started falling off the South’s waters near Yeonpyeong island around 2:34 pm Tuesday.

Air Force fighter jets were deployed to the island.  One South Korean marine is reported killed and four South Koreans were injured in the cross fire.

The South’s Presidential office suspects that this move from North is in protest of an ongoing South’s military drill on the western coast as the North sent such message to Seoul earlier in the day.

President Cheong instructed his security ministers to ensure that the situation is contained.

The impact is immediately felt internationally as the US dollar rose, Japanese yen is falling, US Treasury is falling, the Euro, stocks and commodities fell too for fears of a wider crisis ahead.

In an earlier report, US special envoy Stephen Bosworth is to visit Beijing after trips to Seoul and Tokyo to discuss the latest revelations.
